Restricted Area Signage: What Counts as “Authorised Personnel Only”

Restricted Area Signage: What Counts as “Authorised Personnel Only”

Quick facts

  • Colour: Blue/white (notice) or red/white (prohibition), depending on the wording used
  • Format: Rectangular notice signs, often paired with physical access control (locks, swipe access, barriers)
  • Standard: Falls under AS 1319 notice and regulatory sign conventions
  • Where you’ll see them: Plant rooms, chemical stores, server rooms, construction site perimeters, high-voltage switch rooms

I’m Doug Lindqvist, General Manager of Pinnacle Signage. A vague “Keep Out” sign might deter a casual passer-by, but it does very little for you legally or practically if someone with no business being in a hazardous area wanders in anyway.

Why Wording Matters More Than People Think

There’s a real difference between a sign that says “Private” and one that says “Restricted Area — Authorised Personnel Only.”

The second version does two things the first doesn’t: it defines that access is controlled (not just discouraged), and it implies a system exists for determining who counts as “authorised” — which supports your position if an unauthorised entry leads to an incident.

For genuinely hazardous areas — confined spaces, high-voltage rooms, chemical storage — pairing “Restricted Area” wording with the specific hazard (“Restricted Area — High Voltage — Authorised Personnel Only”) gives both the access control message and the safety warning in one sign.

Where Restricted Area Signs Should Go

  • Every entry point: Not just the main one. A restricted area with three doors needs three signs.
  • At eye level: Mounted so it’s the first thing seen before someone reaches the actual hazard, not after.
  • On temporary barriers: Construction sites often restrict access to specific zones as work progresses, and portable signage should move with the boundary.

Backing the Sign With Real Access Control

Signage alone isn’t access control — it’s notice of it. Wherever practical, pair restricted area signage with an actual physical control: locked doors, swipe access, or a barrier.

This protects you if an incident occurs in an area that was clearly signed and genuinely restricted, rather than just labelled.
